The independence of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) is intact and should continue to be strengthened.
An external investigation carried out on behalf of the ENSI Board found no indications that ENSI was subject to material influence from Nagra (the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste). In response to this investigation, ENSI has adapted the regulations regarding internal procedures for drawing up protocols, reports and expert opinions.
Along with the ENSI website, the new ENSI Board website has been redesigned in line with the new look of the Federal Administration. It has a fresher design, offers new functions, and is more clearly structured. The main topics can still be accessed directly via the main navigation.
The ENSI Board has assessed ENSI’s regulatory activities in relation to Switzerland’s nuclear installations as responsible, appropriate and of high quality.
In autumn 2024, the Board of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) visited the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). A visit to the nuclear power plants at the Olkiluoto site in Finland was also on the programme.
The continuous improvement of nuclear safety and security in Switzerland is the main concern of international cooperation. The regulatory exchange of information and experience plays an important role in this. The ENSI Board therefore updated and adopted the Strategy International Activities.
At the end of 2023, Oskar Grözinger left the ENSI Board, as he has reached the statutory term limit of 12 years. In Oskar Grözinger, the ENSI Board is losing a member who brought both in-depth knowledge and experience in the field of reactor technology and extensive leadership experience to the Board.
The Swiss Federal Council confirms six incumbent members of the ENSI Board for the coming legislative period.
At its meeting on 4 March 2022, the Federal Council followed the proposal of the ENSI Board and elected Paul Bossart as a new member of the ENSI Board. Paul Bossart will take office on 1 April 2022.
In pursuit of new career challenges, Tanja Manser announced her resignation from the ENSI Board at the end of December 2021.
Against the background of the lessons learnt from the major nuclear accident in Fukushima, the ENSI Board will continue to carry out its duties both vigilantly and independently, while ensuring the clear separation of ENSI’s regulatory safety function on the one hand from economic and political interests on the other.
